What is a Cosplay Cafe?

Cosplay Cafe are theme restaurants originated in Akihabara, Tokyo, Japan. Service staffs dress up in cosplay costumes instead of normal uniforms. Such restaurants and cafés have quickly become a staple of Japanese otaku culture.

Maid Cafe is a subcategory of these theme restaurants where waitresses dressed in maid costumes and treat customers like masters (goshujin-sama) and mistress (ojou-sama). The maids greet customers with “Welcome home, Master, Mistress” (お帰りなさいませ、ご主人様 , お嬢様！ Okaerinasaimase, goshujinsama, ojousama) instead of the usual 'welcome'.
